Better Together-Making Our Community the Best Place for Children and Families

News and Updates

Please join us on Thursday, August 19 from 3:45-6:00pm at the Laconia Congregational Church, 18 Veterans Square. Enter the church building through either of the two glass doors and head down to the basement.  *There will be a door prize this month—Two three-day passes to the Highland Games*  Please note that we have changed the start time to 3:45pm to allow sufficient time for people to arrive and sign in.  We would like to begin promptly at 4:00pm.

  • Please bring a can of soup, a friend, and your positive energy.
  • Beverages will be offered.  If you are hungry, please grab a snack at the Outdoor Market held right outside the church from 3-7pm on Thursdays.
  • Parking will be limited because of the market so please plan additional time to find a spot.  You may want to park behind the railroad station or at City Hall
  • Assistance with childcare and transportation available upon request.

We anticipate that attendance at our meeting on August 19 may be lower than usual because of the time of year.  However, we understand that some of the groups have planned to invite outside parties, so we definitely want to hold the meeting as planned.

New Format

The Better Together Steering Committee has been discussing ways to sustain and expand the energy and enthusiasm generated at that first meeting on May 21 and at subsequent Better Together events.  We are thrilled to see people consistently attending and committed to working together, but we do not want to stop there. We want to ensure that Better Together offers opportunities for new people to be integrated into projects and that new ideas have the opportunity to be heard and explored.

In an effort to bring new individuals to Better Together and also reenergize/refocus those of us that have been here since inception, we will now hold two types of Better Together events throughout the year.  The first type will be similar to the monthly meetings that were held in June and July.  These monthly meetings will continue to be a time to share accomplishments both big and small and to meet with committees focused on specific community projects or events.  The second meeting type will be a quarterly meeting with an extended format that will allow more time for socializing and networking.  Refreshments will be offered, speakers may be brought in, and more attention will be given to the recruitment and integration of new participants and the development of new committees at these quarterly events.  Given that many of our current Better Together endeavors appear to be time-limited, these quarterly meetings will be a time to assess our progress.  For committees that have accomplished what they set out to do, these meetings may be a time to celebrate and disband.  For committees that need more time, these meetings may be an opportunity to recruit new membership.  For individuals who have multiple interests, these meetings may be a time to excuse yourself from one endeavor and commit yourself to another.

Our first quarterly event will be held on Thursday, September 30, from 4-7 pm at the Belknap Mill.  Please mark your calendars and tell your friends.  More details will follow.

Better Together Meetings will also be held on October 28 from 3:45-6pm and December 9 from 4-7pm.  Location and more details to follow.
